Bovicef DC (250mg cefalonium; as cefalonium dihydrate)
Bimeda Ireland, manufacturer of Boviseal teat sealant, is pleased to announce the launch of Bovicef DC; their new antibiotic dry cow tube containing 250mg cefalonium (as cefalonium dihydrate). This is only the second cefalonium-based dry cow antibiotic available in Ireland and signifies Bimeda’s ongoing commitment to offering choice and value to the Irish veterinary sector.
Bovicef DC’s cefalonium is a broad-spectrum 1st generation cephalosporin antibiotic dry cow therapy, which offers long-acting protection in the dry period.
The product is licensed for the treatment of subclinical mastitis at drying-off and the prevention of new bacterial infections of the udder during the non-lactating period of cows caused by:
- Staphylococcus aureus,
- Escherichia coli,
- Streptococcus uberis,
- Streptococcus agalactiae,
- Streptococcus dysgalactiae,
- Trueperella pyogenes,
- Klebsiella spp
Andrew Glynn, Bimeda Ireland Sales Manager, commented, ‘Bimeda is committed to providing products and services to the Irish veterinary and farming sectors which assist with the reduction of mastitis in the Irish dairy herd. Bovicef DC is only the second cefalonium dry cow intramammary available in Ireland, and we are pleased to continue to offer great products at a fair price to the Irish veterinary sector.
Bovicef DC is the latest addition to our broad and expanding range of mastitis prevention and treatment products, which offer quality, efficacy and value to the Irish veterinarian and farmer. The product complements our non-antibiotic Boviseal teat sealant, which is used in over 70% of the Irish dairy herd annually.’
For the majority of dairy cows, drying off with both dry cow antibiotics and teat sealant such as Boviseal are still required, and Bimeda are pleased to offer a range of 4 dry cow intramammary antibiotics; each with different actives; allowing the vet to specify the most appropriate choice for their client’s herd.’

Bimeda promotes the responsible use of all antibiotics and supports the move towards selective dry cow therapy in appropriate herds. Rachel Mallet, one of Bimeda’s Technical Veterinarians commented; ‘some farms may be candidates for a selective approach to dry cow therapy, whereby only those animals which will benefit from antibiotic dry cow therapy are treated with carefully prescribed antibiotics, but still receive teat sealant such as Bimeda’s market leading innovator; Boviseal. This should only be carried out on the recommendation of a vet, who will determine whether the farm in question meets the required criteria.
